Yangshao Culture (Pottery)

The Yangshao Culture, one of the most significant Neolithic archaeological cultures in China, was first discovered in 1921 in Yangshao Village, Mianchi County, Henan Province. Dating back approximately 5,000 to 7,000 years, it represents the pinnacle of painted pottery in prehistoric China and is widely regarded as the starting point for modern Chinese archaeological research.

Pottery-making techniques during the Yangshao period were remarkably sophisticated, encompassing a complete sequence from clay selection, vessel forming, and firing temperature control to surface decoration using painting and appliqué methods. Early vessels were primarily constructed using the coil-building technique, where clay strips were stacked and smoothed to form the body. By the middle period, the introduction of slow-wheel rim-trimming marked a significant technological advancement, allowing for more refined and standardized forms.

The Yangshao ceramic repertoire is notably diverse, including basins, bowls, pots, slender-necked jars, and the distinctive small-mouthed pointed-bottom bottles. Each vessel type reflects specific functional and cultural purposes, offering insights into ancient subsistence strategies, social organization, and ritual practices. The painted decorations—featuring geometric patterns, fish motifs, human faces, and abstract designs—are rendered in black, red, and white pigments on a red or yellow clay ground. These motifs are not merely ornamental; they carry symbolic meanings believed to be connected to totemic worship, fertility rituals, and cosmological beliefs of Neolithic communities.
